Nsele, province of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. Kamwanya Noëlla (11 years old) eats her meal provided by WFP as part of the school feeding activity. Noëlla is in class of 6eme. Approximately 13.5 million children in DRC will need humanitarian assistance in 2022, comprising almost 50% of the population in need. School meals help bring and retain children (especially girls) in schools, while contributing to improving their nutritional status, growing the local economy, and reducing poverty when food is locally purchased. In the 2021 – 2022 school year, WFP assisted over 308,000 students in 272 schools. WFP provides each child with one balanced meal every school day, which is often the only nutritious food they get. WFP is supporting the government in setting up its own school feeding programme in the coming years. WFP aims to fully support the government’s initiative in school canteens, which targets 3,000 schools in vulnerable areas. For this to succeed, significant resources are to be mobilized while developing more sustainable financing initiatives such as linking schools to revenue-generating farms. School feeding helps to bring and retain children in schools, while contributing to improving their nutritional status, growing the local economy and reducing poverty. WFP plans to reach 500,000 children in the 2023 – 2024 academic year while buying 1200 metric ton of maize and 400 metric ton of beans worth over USD 1 million.
